Caring for Mirror Trim Detailing: What You Need to Know

Our general upholstery care guide covers fabric care — mirror trim needs a genuinely different approach entirely, since you're caring for glass, not fabric.

Never Spray Cleaner Directly on the Mirror

This is the most consistently repeated piece of advice across every genuine source on the topic: spray glass cleaner onto a soft cloth first, not directly onto the mirror. Excess liquid can seep into the edges where the mirror meets its frame or backing, causing damage over time.

Use the Right Cleaner

Stick to a proper glass cleaner, or a simple homemade solution of equal parts white vinegar and water — avoid solvent-based or ammonia-heavy products. Never use abrasive sponges or scouring pads, which can genuinely scratch the surface.

The Right Wiping Technique

Wipe in a consistent pattern — top to bottom, or in overlapping straight lines — rather than circular motions, which tend to leave streaks. A microfiber cloth is genuinely the best choice.

Dust Regularly, Before It Becomes a Bigger Clean

Mirror surfaces show dust and fingerprints more visibly than fabric does — a quick dust with a soft cloth a few times a week keeps the surface looking genuinely sharp.

Protect the Edges Specifically

The edges where mirror meets frame are genuinely the most vulnerable point — more prone to chipping than the flat mirrored surface itself.

If a Scratch Does Happen

Light surface scratches can sometimes be minimised with a dedicated glass polishing compound — but for anything beyond a superficial mark, we'd genuinely recommend professional assessment rather than DIY methods that risk making it worse.
