Double vs King Size Bed: Which Is Right for You?

Valtiva Deluxe bed frame, illustrating the real room presence of a King-size upholstered bed

If you've read our UK Bed Size Guide, you already know the basic numbers: a Double measures 135 x 190cm, a King measures 150 x 200cm. This is where we go deeper, with real room-size guidance and a genuine decision framework.

The Real Room-Size Question — Honestly Answered

Most interior design guidance places the comfortable threshold for a King at around 3m x 3m (9 sqm) as a working minimum, with 3.5m x 3.5m recommended for genuinely comfortable clearance. The UK's Nationally Described Space Standard sets a regulatory minimum of 11.5 sqm for a double bedroom generally.

A Detail Most Size Guides Miss: Storage Beds Are Different

If you're considering one of our Ottoman storage beds, the critical clearance measurement isn't the sides, it's how much clear floor space you have at the foot end for the frame to lift open fully.

The Real Decision Framework

  1. Measure your room first, decide second.
  2. Check your height. King is 10cm longer than Double.
  3. Be honest about how you sleep. The King's extra 15cm of width matters more than it sounds on paper.
  4. Account for what else needs to fit.
  5. If you're choosing a storage bed, re-check clearance at the foot end specifically.

The Honest Bottom Line

A Double is the right call if your room is genuinely below 3m x 3m, or if budget is a real constraint. A King is worth the jump if your room clears that 3m x 3m threshold.
