One recurring anecdote claims that on his deathbed, Lord Stanhope instructed his butler to "give Mr. Dayrolles a chair" — meaning simply to pull up a seat for his godson. The butler apparently misunderstood this as an instruction to give the Chesterfield chair itself to Dayrolles, who took it home and displayed it for guests to admire. Whether this specific story is fully accurate, it's a genuinely charming piece of furniture folklore worth knowing, with appropriate scepticism about its precise accuracy.

The Real Victorian Adoption

What's more consistently documented is the Chesterfield's genuine rise during the Victorian era specifically, when it became a fixture of London's gentlemen's clubs — historic institutions like White's (established 1693) and the Carlton Club (established 1832), some of which are still active today.

One of the more interesting documented uses: Sigmund Freud is said to have used a Chesterfield sofa in his psychoanalysis practice, based on a theory that patients spoke more freely when genuinely comfortable.
