How to Measure Your Bedroom Before Buying a Bed
How to Measure Your Bedroom Before Buying a Bed
Written by the Valtiva Team
You'll see "measure your room first" mentioned throughout our guides — here's the actual step-by-step technique, done properly, rather than the general reminder.
What You Actually Need
- A tape measure — at least 5 metres, ideally with a locking mechanism
- A pencil and paper, or your phone's notes app
- Ideally, a second person to hold the other end for long walls
Step 1: Measure Wall to Wall, Not Furniture to Furniture
Measure at floor level, from finished wall to finished wall — hook the tape at the inside surface of one wall and pull it straight across to the opposite wall. Start with the longest length, then measure the width. Record both in centimetres, since that's how UK bed dimensions are listed.
Step 2: Measure Twice, and Check Both Diagonals if the Room Isn't Perfectly Square
Don't assume opposite walls match exactly — older properties especially can have walls that aren't perfectly parallel. If your room's shape looks at all irregular, measure both diagonals as well as the straight walls.
Step 3: Note Every Fixed Feature, Not Just the Walls
Windows, radiators, door swing, sloped ceilings, and any other fixed feature all affect where a bed frame can actually go.
Step 4: Measure the Full Delivery Path, Not Just the Room
This is the step most guides skip: measure every doorway, hallway, and stairwell turn your bed will need to travel through. See our delivery preparation guide for exactly why this matters.
Step 5: Mark the Bed's Real Footprint on the Floor
Use masking or painter's tape to outline the bed's actual footprint directly on your floor — not just the mattress size, but the frame's total dimensions including the headboard. Walk around it as if the bed were already there.
A Genuine Professional Tip Worth Repeating
Always confirm whether a product's listed dimensions refer to the item itself or its packaged size for delivery.
