Ottoman Beds Explained: What They Are and How They Work

An Ottoman bed uses a gas-lift mechanism to raise the entire mattress platform, revealing a large hidden storage compartment underneath. Here's a genuine, practical explanation of how it works and what to actually expect.

How the Mechanism Works

A gas-lift or piston system supports the mattress platform, letting it lift smoothly from either the foot end or the side depending on the design. The mechanism does most of the physical work — you're guiding it up, not lifting the full weight of the mattress and base unassisted.

What Genuinely Sets Ottoman Storage Apart

Unlike drawer-based storage, an Ottoman bed's compartment is one large, uninterrupted space — better suited to bulky items (spare duvets, luggage, seasonal clothing) than a divan's smaller drawers. We cover this comparison properly in our Ottoman vs Divan guide.

Real Practical Considerations

  • Clearance matters at the foot end (where the mechanism lifts), not the sides — genuinely useful in smaller rooms, covered in our small bedroom guide
  • Physical lifting is still involved, even gas-assisted — worth considering if mobility is a factor for anyone using the bed
  • Sizing in our own range is currently Double, King, and Super King — no Single or Small Double option
