The Concept Most People Don't Know: "Nap Direction"

Velvet's pile has a directional nap — brushing or vacuuming with the nap smooths the fibres, while going against it lifts them, changing how light reflects off the surface. Always work in the same direction as the surrounding pile.

Water Is a Bigger Risk for Velvet Than Most Fabrics

This is worth taking seriously: velvet absorbs moisture readily, and excess water can cause genuine marks, shrinkage, or watermarks that other fabrics simply wouldn't show. Use minimal moisture, always blot rather than soak, and let it air dry fully.

Crush Marks Are Normal, Not a Fault

Genuinely reassuring to know: pressure marks or shading where you regularly sit or lean are a completely normal characteristic of velvet's pile, not a sign of damage or poor quality. These often soften naturally over time.

Never Iron Directly on Velvet

Direct heat crushes the pile instantly and permanently — never apply an iron directly to velvet, even on a low setting. A handheld steamer held at a safe distance, followed by gentle brushing, is the genuinely safe method.

Avoid Plastic Covers

It's tempting to throw a plastic cover over velvet during a move, but plastic doesn't breathe — condensation builds underneath and can leave watermarks or even mildew. Use a breathable cotton cover instead.

Vacuum Technique Matters

Use your vacuum's soft brush attachment specifically, never a standard nozzle — stiff bristles can crush the pile and leave marks that are genuinely difficult to reverse.
