Tall Headboard Beds vs Standard Beds: Is the Extra Height Worth It?
Tall Headboard Beds vs Standard Beds: Is the Extra Height Worth It?
Written by the Valtiva Team
Beyond the visual statement, there are genuine practical reasons a tall headboard might (or might not) suit you — here's an honest look.
The Genuine Practical Benefit Most Guides Skip
If you regularly sit up in bed to read, watch TV, or work, a tall headboard has a real functional advantage: it keeps your head and shoulders properly supported without leaning back against a bare wall. A standard headboard often doesn't extend high enough to support you comfortably once you're sitting upright.
The Real Room-Proportion Guidance
A useful general rule: your headboard should be proportional to your room and bed size, not just chosen for maximum drama. Standard headboards (roughly 24–36 inches above the mattress) work well in smaller rooms; taller headboards (54 inches and up, like our own 70/80/90 inch range) genuinely suit larger rooms and higher ceilings better.
An Honest Word on a Claim You'll See Elsewhere
You'll find some sources citing very specific statistics about tall headboards making rooms feel a precise percentage larger, or increasing "luxury perception" by an exact figure. We found the same suspiciously specific numbers repeated word-for-word across multiple, differently-branded sites — which reads more like duplicated marketing copy than genuine independent research. We'd rather tell you honestly that we can't verify those figures than repeat them as fact.
What We Can Confidently Say
Vertical elements do genuinely draw the eye upward, a real, widely accepted interior design principle — we just can't put a precise percentage on the effect, and you should be sceptical of any source that claims to.
Cost and Commitment
A taller headboard is a genuine upgrade in materials and construction, reflected in the price — our own range prices the 80" and 90" options at +£50 over the 70" standard.
Our Honest Recommendation
Choose tall if you regularly sit up in bed, your room has genuine height and floor space, or you want real visual presence. Choose standard height if your room is more modestly proportioned, or a quieter headboard suits your style better.
